VMTS has completed a 3D laser scanning survey at the Dolphin Palace (Quang Ninh Exhibition of Planning and Expo Center) in Ha Long, ahead of the biggest 3D Mapping show the venue has ever hosted, scheduled for 28.08–02.09.2026.

For a landmark with such complex curved geometry, survey data is the foundation everything else depends on: 3D Mapping content only lines up perfectly with a building’s surface when it’s built on the actual as-built geometry, not the original design drawings, which can drift from what was actually constructed.

Why does a 3D laser survey matter for 3D Mapping?

3D Mapping (video mapping) projects moving light and imagery directly onto a building’s surface, calibrated so the visual effect tracks every architectural line in real time. That requires a 3D model that matches the as-built structure exactly — every curve, every lean, every ridge on the surface.

That’s the role of a 3D laser scanning survey: the scanner records millions of coordinate points across the building’s surface, producing a point cloud with millimeter-level accuracy. On a structure with a shape as distinctive as the Dolphin Palace, even a small mismatch between the model and reality is enough to throw the projected imagery off the edge of the surface, breaking the illusion for the audience.

The Dolphin Palace is the popular name for the Quang Ninh Exhibition of Planning and Expo Center, a landmark building on the shore of Ha Long Bay whose sweeping, curved roofline evokes the shape of a dolphin. According to a public announcement shared on the Quang Ninh Xanh page, the building will get a striking transformation with the largest 3D Mapping show it has ever hosted, scheduled to run from 28.08 to 02.09.2026.
