Point Cloud Data: The Key to an Accurate Point Cloud to BIM Workflow

Significance of Original Accurate Point Cloud Data

The use and preservation of original point cloud data are crucial for the success of a Point Cloud to BIM project!

Just as photographers value and protect their original RAW images, original point cloud data is equally important in Point Cloud to BIM workflows. Without the original data, checking and correcting errors becomes very difficult, if not impossible.

Common Problems: Incomplete Data

Point Cloud to BIM projects are typically commissioned as a full-service by surveying offices, with the expectation of receiving a 3D model or 2D drawings for future renovation purposes. However, the 3D laser scanning data or point cloud data are rarely clearly defined by investors. This lack of definition can lead to significant problems if the as-built model does not match reality, making the point cloud data essential for validation and verification.

Many clients only realize that their data is incomplete, altered, or missing critical information when they need to review the point cloud. Requesting the original data at this stage can incur additional costs, or worse, the data may have been entirely deleted by the surveying office. Unfortunately, this has happened to several of our clients.

Common Issues with Processed Point Cloud Data

A client, an architectural firm, received comprehensive as-built data from the investor, including point cloud data and a complete 3D model. They assumed everything was simple and ready to use for renovation design. However, upon review, they found significant discrepancies between the model and reality. They asked us to check and correct these errors.

During analysis, we discovered inaccuracies in the point cloud registration, and the 3D model was based on these erroneous registrations. To correct the model accurately, we needed the complete point cloud data to realign the stations. However, the client only had processed point cloud data, which involved cleaning, unification, and optimization of point spacing, leading to the loss of important information.

Workflow for Processing Accurate Point Cloud Data

Surveying with Raw Point Cloud Data:

Raw data can typically only be read with the software that comes with the laser scanner. The original data is messy and unstructured and cannot be used directly.

Data Registration:

This step involves using various software tools to align the scan stations and optimize accuracy. The data after registration is considered original, even if it appears messy and unclean. It is crucial to preserve this registered data as it serves as the foundation for all subsequent steps in the Point Cloud to BIM workflow.

Data Cleaning and Unification:

In this step, unnecessary points are removed, and the point cloud is optimized for further processing. Point spacing is adjusted, and data volumes are reduced to facilitate processing. This step is important but should be done carefully to avoid losing critical information.

3D Modeling:

Based on the cleaned and optimized point cloud data, the 3D model is created. Precise point cloud data is crucial in this step to produce a model that closely matches reality.

Review and Validation:

The created 3D model is checked against the original point cloud data to ensure it is accurate and error-free. Without the original data, this step can be very difficult as important reference points may be missing.

Conclusion / Takeaway:

The use and preservation of original point cloud data are essential for the success of a Point Cloud to BIM project. Only through careful data registration and preservation can the final 3D model be accurate and useful. Clients should always ensure they have access to the complete and unaltered point cloud data to perform future reviews and adjustments.

Be cautious when choosing your surveying office and ensure that you receive the original point cloud data. Ask about the point cloud workflow the office uses and have them explain how the data is registered and processed. This ensures that your project is based on solid data and that future renovations and adjustments can be carried out smoothly.

Careful handling of point cloud data and the correct Point Cloud to BIM workflow can significantly enhance the quality and accuracy of your project, saving time and costs in the long run.

„Your plans are perfect; I’ve never seen anything like this before. These are drawings of the highest quality, I must say. I want to express my sincere thanks once again for your work.“

VMT modeled a large industrial building in 3D for our research project. We provided DWG plans to VMT, and they delivered a highly detailed model, including the building envelope, interior walls, openings, and stairs. We had previously contracted a German company for the same object, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out. I was relieved and pleased that VMT handled it so reliably. Thank you for the excellent work and the truly fair price!

Very reliable company, courteous staff, and top-quality work. Our plans were created quickly and accurately. Thank you for that. Highly recommended.
