Is 3D laser scanning data large?
The size of the data depends on 4 main factors:
- The number of scan stations and scan files
- Whether the scanning is performed indoors or outdoors
- The amount of detail captured in each scan station
- The settings of the 3D scanning device, whether high or low quality
Typically, the data size ranges from 10–100GB before optimization. It can be reduced to around 1–2GB using optimization algorithms and by removing duplicate points.
Compared to regular data, this is considered large, but in most cases it does not create difficulties for clients other than requiring more storage space.
Proper optimization and management require a well-structured workflow. VMTS clients will receive consultation, or we can provide full support through our 3D Point Cloud to BIM modeling services.
